Scholarships from South Korean government for México.

The Government of the Republic of Korea yearly opens scholarships to study master's degrees, PhD’s or research and short courses in the fields of Korean studies, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering and other. The duration, in the case of master degrees, is of 36 months, PhD is 48 months (including study of the Korean language, depending on the case, and 12 months for research). As post-graduate studies must be done in English or Korean, participants are required to attend a language course for a period of 6 / 12 months before formally starting their studies. Researchers must have knowledge of the Korean language.

Call for Papers (Essays and Book-reviews)
Sungkyun Journal of East Asian Studies.

Sungkyun Journal of East Asian Studies(SJEAS), published by the Academy of East Asian Studies(AEAS), Sungkyunkwan University, Seoul, Korea, invites high-quality contributions from all over the world. SJEAS is a peer-reviewed multi-disciplinary journal dedicated to East Asian Studies. It concentrates on the humanities but some social science topics are also included.

SJEAS is interested in papers and book-reviews on: Classics, Philosophy, Religion, Anthropology, Literature, Drama and Film, History, Culture and Social Movements Of East Asia(China, Japan, Korea) of all periods

SJEAS will remunerate the accepted articles with a sum of 1,500 USD and the accepted book-reviews with a sum of 200 USD.

Faculty Position in History of Korea or Japan at Loyola Marymount University

The History Department of Loyola Marymount University invites applications for a full-time, entry-level, tenure-track position in the history of Korea or Japan. Teaching responsibilities include lower division survey courses in East Asia and upper division courses in the history of Japan or Korea. Ph.D. is required. Visiting Professor in Korean Studies

The Center for Korean Studies at UCLA, with the generous support of the Academy of Korean Studies, is seeking to host a visiting professor from Latin America to offer a course or courses in a Korea-related social science field not covered by our faculty during either our winter quarter (January 5-March 20, 2009) or spring quarter (March 30-June 12, 2009).

We are open to either quarter long or shorter intensive courses, but first preference will be given to applications for quarter long courses. The ability to teach an undergraduate course in English is required. The exact rate of pay will be determined according to UCLA pay scales, but will be some in the range of $10,000. We will also provide a housing allowance and round trip airfare, subject to final approval of the budget by the Academy of Korean Studies.

Call for Papers: Korea Yearbook 2009

The editors of Korea Yearbook – Politics, Economy, Society, published since 2007 by Brill (Leiden and Boston), are soliciting proposals for articles to be included in the 2009 edition of the yearbook. The publication is edited by Rüdiger Frank, James E. Hoare, Patrick Köllner, and Susan Pares.

The editors are particularly interested in papers dealing with North Korea and inter-Korean affairs and papers analyzing Korean affairs from a comparative perspective. Papers on other topics within the scope of the Korea Yearbook are also welcome.

Interested scholars should send proposals of no more than 500 words to Patrick Köllner (koellner@giga-hamburg.de) by October 31, 2008. The editors will decide by mid-November which proposals for papers should be developed into manuscripts (10,000 words maximum) to be submitted by February 28, 2009.

Call for Manuscripts: Asian Journal of Communication

The editors of the Asian Journal of Communication invite the submission of manuscripts to be considered for publication in a special issue of the journal titled “Hybridization of Reality: Re-Imagining the Communication Environment in Korea.”

Guest editors for this issue are Hye-ryeon Lee (University of Hawai’i at Manoa); Hyoknam Kwon (Chonbuk National University); and Eungjun Min (Rhode Island College).

The concept of hybridity enables a broad exploration of the impact of new times on the social and political landscape of modernity.

The Graduate School of Korean Studies, Academy of Korean Studies (AKS), will host the 2nd International Junior Academic Conference on Korean Studies on Sept. 25 and 26, 2008, under the sponsorship of the Republic of Korea Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology. This year’s theme will be “Toward an Interdisciplinary Approach and a New Horizon in Korean Studies.”

The conference will take place at the AKS Graduate School of Korean Studies, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do. The language of the conference is Korean. Active participation of young scholars is welcome.

Call for Proposals: SNU International Symposium on Korean Studies

Seoul National University and the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies have announced the scheduling of the first SNU International Symposium on Korean Studies, to be held October 16-18 2008.

Proposals are now being accepted for panels — four to eight papers for one or two sessions — with the goal of publication of an edited.
